Home Renovations That Can Help Combat The Drought

The bathroom is the place that wastes the most water in your home. From the shower to the toilet, water runs everything in the bathroom, and in a severe drought, that just isn’t something you want. When your entire state seems to be sucked dry, wasting water in your bathroom is not an option. Luckily, there are solutions to the water wasters you might have installed in your home right now. A simple remodel can help you save water and in turn help the environment. Here are just a few of these projects you can do to save water during a drought.

LOW-FLOW SHOWER HEAD

Possibly the easiest project of them all is installing a water saving shower head. This is an eco-friendly way to keep good water pressure while still conserving water. A normal shower head allows 2.1 gallons of water to flow every minute. That means for just a 5-minute shower, the average American is using nearly 10.5 gallons of water. Ranging in price from around $30 to upwards of $200. The more pricey heads give you more options when it comes to the water pressure. With some shower heads you can adjust how the water is expelled from the shower head. This can help you feel more coverage or strength of the water, even though there isn’t nearly what you are used to coming from the head.

DOUBLE-FLUSH OR LOW-FLUSH TOILET

In the last 10 years, toilets have become more advanced. What used to take 7 gallons to flush now takes on average 3 to 5, depending on the toilet you own. However, you can lower this number even further with a low flush or double flush toilet. For this remodel it is important to hire a knowledgeable contractor who has worked with these types of toilets before, as the install is slightly different from a classic toilet. You often see these toilets in places like schools and restaurants, but installing one in your home can be an amazing water saver. Low-flush toilets use about half the water of a classic toilet and a double flush toilet allows you to flush with more or less water depending on whether there is liquid or solid waste that needs to be flushed. Either is a great option for saving water, especially in an area going through a severe drought.

STEAM BATHS

A steam bath is not only a great option for saving water, it is also a relaxing spa-like experience in your own home. A steam bath uses only steam and water vapor as opposed to gallons of water to raise your core temperature. This treatment is often used in spas and saunas to relax and clean out your body and pores. What’s great about installing a steam bath in your own home is that is used a lot less water than a traditional bath tub will. If you choose this project, just make the steam area as small as possible. The smaller the steam bath, the hotter the vapor can get, and the better it will work for you as a bathtub replacement.

TIGHTEN YOUR FAUCET

When it comes to sinks, most use 2 to 5 gallons of water per minute. Something easy you can do to help this problem is making sure the faucet stays off most of the day. Brush your teeth in the shower or turn off the sink in between wetting your toothbrush and actually brushing your teeth. One of the biggest culprits, however, are leaks. Have someone come in every month or two to tighten up your faucets and sink pipes. This can save you gallons of water in the long run as a constant drip can make you lose anywhere from 3 to 10 gallons in a given day.
